Bally Skateball Pinball Finds a New Home (Me)

So I wrote a few days ago about the prospect of picking this game up despite the significant playfield wear. Well here she is…

When I got her, only the playfield lights came on. I got no LEDs, no sound, no flashes on the LED…nothing.Remember, I only picked it up for $100, so I’m not too disappointed that it wasn’t working. The backglass on this is flawless – despite being ugly by design, and the game is complete and even came with the manual. Check out that playfield wear – whoa!

Since the MPU board wasn’t giving me any LED flashes or doing anything when I hit the test switch, I figured there was at least a power issue if not more. I checked all my fuses – good. I checked my voltages on the driver board – nothing. Aha! No power to the board, but power at the xformer. I checked my connectors and BINGO! Connector J3 on the driver board was burned in several spots and essentially cracked in half! I placed an order to Marco Specialties for a connector replacement kit, but in the mean time, I held the connector to make good contact and turned on the game – Ding! Ding! Ding! I got 7 flashes on the MPU and the game came right up. Aside from some minor LED display issues and some blown bulbs, this game is doing A-OK.

Check out the burned connector below:

How exciting to be in the process of bringing a pin back to life! Its sad to think a few bad connections and a machine like this could have been headed for a dumpster. :-(

As far as the playfield wear goes… as long as the electronics and mechanics work, it will be fun to play even if the playfield is a little bare. :-)
